The
Harris Tapestry consists of 8 individual panels. Each panel depicts
a different area of the Isle of Harris. The tapestry is a collage
of various individual pieces,
which have been brought together on each of the panels to form representations
of the islands past and present. The tapestry is all hand made and
only local natural fibres have been used. The tapestry was
started in June 1998 and was completed by December 2000. The
project took a lot longer to complete than was anticipated. This was
mainly due to the hard work required to produce the detail that was
required, which can only be appreciated when viewed directly (the images on this website are heavily compressed).
